Okay, at long last I now have the gallery of pictures up. This was an amazing group and I’m so sorry it took so long to
get things completed.
We started off our trailwork on Trillium on a perfect sunny day and headed up Svelte Tiger through a rough rocky area around a bend to the Seeping Ledge Bridge. As this entire section sits below and through a very wet embankment many many Rolling Grade Nicks were constructed to shed water off the trail and prevent erosion. Many large... no huge rocks... were pried out of the trail all the way up to the Seeping Ledge Bridge. These rocks were used to build up a long sweeping banked corner. A “French Drain” was installed just before the bridge to solve a particularly difficult water problem.
Day two began in earnest with a great deal of dirt dug out of large hummocks to fill the many holes where rocks had been removed, and to fill the banked corner. By lunch time a great deal of progress had been made and we looked to be on great schedule to finish the trail all the way up to the bridge.
A light rain fell on the group through lunch as I carefully monitored the doppler radar on my iPhone and confidently proclaimed that I thought we would probably slip right through two strong cells to the north and south. Three minutes later the greatest deluge of rain, marble sized hail, and thunder fell upon us. I watched incredulously as most of our hard earned work flowed down the trail. I’m not sure I had ever seen that much water fall all at once as I watched large hail stones bounce off the head’s of group members. We all headed down the mountain following a group of young Pine Hill Camp mountain bikers to the bottom and found refuge in the Flip Side Skatepark until plastic bags could be brought to preserve the van seats from some sopping wet people. Quite a day!!
Two days later another group emerged from the ranks to try to go in and pick up where the first group’s hard work had come to an abrupt and soggy end. Luckily this group was of equal attitude and heart and moved perhaps the most dirt I’ve seen out of the two large dirt pits. Soon the entire sweeping banked corner was dirted in, along with numerous “Nemo” loads down the trail to replace much of the dirt lost in the deluge. One nice thing was it became very obvious where extra erosion control needed to go in to insure a trail contour that would last for many many years to come. Trillium received some perfect rolling grade nicks, along with many more set in along Svelte Tiger. A long log ride was muscled in alongside the trail using a large fallen tree root as a ramp at one end providing a nice element along the trail to test hikers and bikers balance. The final section of trail up and around to the bridge was smoothed and completed to the bridge.
A great week, very much enjoyed by all of us and greatly appreciated by the many many park users that will use this section of trail for many many years to come.
Thanks SO much!! - Michael
